The Sun-Times endorses Meg Loughran Cappel for Illinois Senate in the 49th District. | Ashlee Rezin Garcia/Sun-Times
She has a record of advocating for vulnerable students as a special education teacher and board member for Joliet Township High School District 204.
When Democrat Meg Loughran Cappel of Shorewood says she will push for equity in education as a member of the state senate, we believe her. She has a track record of advocating for vulnerable students as a special education teacher and board member for Joliet Township High School District 204. As a school board member, she oversaw the implementation of a program designed to help students who struggle in traditional classrooms because of emotional, academic or behavioral problems.
The Joliet school board also acquired land for a transition center for students with disabilities. A goal of the center is to help students find careers.
Loughran Cappel, who is known for consensus-building on the school board, would likely bring a thoughtful tone to Senate debates. We have no doubt she would be a strong voice for underserved communities. She has our endorsement for this open seat. Also running is Republican Thomas McCullagh of Shorewood.
