In early May, I had the honor of attending the Illinois Firefighter Memorial in Springfield. This annual ceremony pays tribute to the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice to protect others. Firefighters are always willing to put themselves in harm’s way, often without a second thought. This memorial is just one way we show our gratitude, but our appreciation must go beyond words. That’s why I introduced Senate Resolution 96, declaring May 11–17 as Home Fire Sprinkler Week in Illinois. As I said in our announcement, “A home fire sprinkler could save you thousands — and more importantly, it could save the lives of your loved ones.”

We also celebrated Parks Day at the Capitol, recognizing the vital role our local park districts play in making our towns vibrant and healthy places to live. From playgrounds and walking trails to golf courses and community events, park districts enrich our lives in countless ways.

Speaking of investment, I recently helped secure more than $680,000 in state funding for two major projects through the Manhattan Park District: the Round Barn Restoration and Ivanhoe Park Development. These projects reflect our commitment to preserving heritage while expanding opportunities for future generations.

Back in the district, I was proud to help deliver over $2 million in new funding for job training and workforce development. This expansion of the Illinois Works Pre-apprenticeship Program into Kankakee and Cook counties will prepare young people for careers in construction and the trades — building both individual success and stronger communities.

We’re also making progress on public safety. With drug overdoses rising — especially due to xylazine — I worked to pass legislation to restrict its illegal use while protecting legitimate agricultural purposes. I want to thank Kankakee County Coroner Bob Gessner for supporting this effort.

Finally, I continue to stand with our farmers, who are facing significant crop damage from deer. That’s why I introduced legislation to give landowners more flexibility to manage deer populations on their property. These common-sense measures were developed in partnership with the Illinois Farm Bureau and the Department of Natural Resources.

As we enter the final stretch of the spring legislative session, I remain focused on delivering results that matter: safer homes, stronger job opportunities, healthier communities, and a brighter future for everyone in the 40th District.
