In March of 2023, the Macoupin Center for the Developmentally Disabled (MCDD) applied for a Community Funding Project grant through Congresswoman Nikki Budzinski. Three months later, the MCDD received notification that its “Growing MCDD” project made it through the House Appropriations Committee. In March of 2024, the MCDD was notified that its Growing MCDD project was indeed signed into law with the passing of the bipartisan government funding bill.

Budzinski visited Carlinville to present the MCDD with a $500,000 check July 16.

This funding will be used by the MCDD to relocate its current facility to a more accessible and safe location that will allow the Center to provide more education and opportunities for Macoupin County residents who have developmental disabilities. Further information has yet to be determined.

“We are extremely grateful for all the hard work and time that Congresswoman Nikki Budzinski and her staff, including Brian Zilm and John Lee, have put forth on this project,” said MCDD Development Coordinator Kimberly Wing. “We appreciate this opportunity and look forward to working towards the goal of growing MCDD to serve more adults with developmental disabilities living in Macoupin County

Per Wing, the mission of the MCDD is to “make a positive and lasting impact in the lives of developmentally disabled adults by providing an empowering environment built on education, compassion and dignity while assisting them with retaining and expanding their social, life and academic skills.

Our motto, ‘Where friends become family,’ resonates deeply at MCDD,” said Wing. “The impact our small nonprofit day learning center has on our community is truly inspiring. We are thrilled for the opportunity to expand and continue nurturing growth and potential among individuals with developmental disabilities.”

“I was proud to join colleagues on both sides of the aisle to pass a government funding deal that provides critical federal resources to projects in Central and Southern Illinois,” said Budzinski. “I’m thrilled to have secured this money for the MCDD and I look forward to seeing this funding used to help improve infrastructure and services available to folks with developmental disabilities. I’ll continue to work to deliver results for Central and Southern Illinoisans and advocate for federal dollars to make it back to our community.”
