Imagine getting this call: “Please come to the White House and tell us what you think.”
That’s reality for State Rep. Kelly Cassidy (pictured, far right) (D-Chicago), a pro-choice lawmaker who is also a leading voice on LGBTQ issues. She says the Biden administration is getting into the habit of learning what is happening in the nation’s statehouses.
Cassidy was part of a group of state lawmakers who shared their experiences with Biden senior staff. Cassidy says she considers herself fortunate compared to many peers.
“It was a great opportunity to share ideas,” said Cassidy. “To hear from folks in states that, we are anticipating, are going to take even hostile action on (abortion), so that we can be prepared with the appropriate responses here, was pretty powerful.”
Cassidy, who returned to Washington to watch the President sign the Respect for Marriage Act, says as with abortion, Illinois is attracting people from other states seeking transgender care.
