Congresswoman Marie Newman appointed to Highways & Transit, and Railroads subcommittees
US Rep. Newman (Il-3) named to serve on “Highways & Transit” and “Railroads, Pipelines & Hazardous Materials” subcommittees as part of T&I Committee. New T&I subcommittee assignments will build on efforts to create more efficient roads and railways but also much-needed economic development in Illinois’ 3rd Congressional District
U.S. Representative Marie Newman (IL-03) announced Tuesday (Jan. 26, 2021) that she has been selected to serve on the Subcommittee on Highways and Transit, and the Subcommittee on Railroads, Pipelines and Hazardous Materials as part of the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure (T&I).
“From the Chicago Transit Authority and Metra to Interstate 55 and Interstate 294, railroads and highways run deep within Illinois’ 3rd Congressional District, which is why I am proud to be selected to serve on these subcommittees so I can further ensure our residents have the high-quality, reliable transit systems they deserve,” said Congresswoman Newman.
“While our transit providers have experienced years of disinvestment coupled with a global pandemic that has reduced ridership dramatically, my work on these subcommittees will be centered on ensuring we build back our systems and make them more affordable, accessible and reliable than ever before. I know that when we invest in transportation, we’re not only creating more efficient roads and railways but also much-needed economic development and new good-paying jobs.”
The Subcommittee on Highways and Transit is responsible for the development of national surface transportation policy, construction and improvement of highway and transit facilities, implementation of highway and transit safety programs and research activities, and regulation of commercial motor vehicle operations.
