The FBI sent a warning to all 50 states earlier this week saying they were monitoring plans for armed protests at all 50 state capitals and in Washington, D.C., in the days leading up to President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration.
Gov. J.B. Pritzker during a press conference Tuesday said he would not discuss specific safety measures, “but suffice to say, the (Illinois State Police) is quite well aware of the challenges that may crop up.”
Government offices across the country are taking steps. The South Carolina Statehouse is closing for five days. California Gov. Gavin Newsom on Thursday mobilized 1,000 members of the National Guard and a fence was installed around the state Capitol grounds in Sacramento. Members of the Pennsylvania National Guard will be brought in to protect the state Capitol as well.
In Washington, thousands of police and military troops are in place. Eight-foot fencing has been put in place around the Capitol, where rioters ransacked offices earlier this month.
