Lipinski to Democrats: Focus on workable solutions, starting with infrastructure

Now that the Democrats are back in power in the U.S. House of Representatives, Rep. Dan Lipinski, D-Western Springs, is calling for his party to focus on "workable solutions that improve everyday lives."

In a statement, Lipinski said the issues Congress should work on are those "most important to improving the everyday lives of families across the 3rd District and our nation." The 3rd District includes all or parts or Romeoville, Lockport, Crest Hill, Homer Glen and Lemont and extends to the southwest side of Chicago. Lipinski won re-election Tuesday.

He said those issues include controlling continually rising health care costs, safety from violence, protecting air and water resources, immigration reform and improving education.

Lipinski said one big issue Congress should address is the need to pass a robust infrastructure bill, investing in roads, public transit, airports and other transportation systems.

Still, Lipinski did talk about the House needing "to reassert its Constitutional role of conducting oversight of the executive branch and the president."

"This is part of Congress’ role in providing checks and balances in the federal government but something that both parties often fail to do when there is one party in control," Lipinski said in the statement.

He cited the years 2007 through 2008, when Democrats controlled the House and George W. Bush was president, as "two of the most productive legislative years I have been a part of in Washington."

He added he is awaiting the conclusion and publication of the report from the Robert Mueller-led special counsel investigation, looking into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election. Lipinski said it was critical the investigation be allowed to "move forward unobstructed and that Congress seriously consider the findings and act if necessary."
