The Homer Township Republicans issued a statement this week denouncing the candidacy of Holocaust denier Arthur Jones, who is running for Congress against Rep. Dan Lipinski, D-Western Springs, in the 3rd District.
“The Homer Township Republican Organization and its members … disavow the candidacy of Arthur Jones,” according to the statement. “There is no place in the Republican Party for the hateful views espoused by this man.”
The organization said its members call “on him to withdraw his name from the ballot immediately.”
Jones won the Republican nomination in March after being unopposed and after the Illinois GOP was unable to successfully challenge his signatures. He earned 4,139 votes in Will County alone. The district includes all or parts of Lockport, Romeoville, Crest Hill, Homer Glen and Lemont and stretches to Midway Airport in Chicago.
In response to the statement, Jones said the Homer Township Republicans had “[really] poor leadership” and called them “yellow, gutless cowards” for advocating against his candidacy.
Jones’ anti-Semitic views have garnered opposition from many in the party, even from as high as Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas. Gov. Bruce Rauner told voters to “vote for anybody but Arthur Jones.” Jones said he thought the shooting at a synagogue in Pittsburgh, which left 11 people dead, might hurt his chances of winning.
Lipinski likely will keep his seat, representing the solidly blue district. The last time he had a general election opponent in 2014, he won by nearly 30 points.
