October has brought encouraging news for economic development across the 40th District, along with important opportunities to support our farmers, help families manage rising costs and strengthen our communities.
One of the highlights was joining Governor Pritzker, local officials and company leaders to celebrate the grand opening of Voortman Steel Machinery’s new U.S. headquarters in Monee.
This $51 million investment includes a new 100,000-square-foot facility that will create 51 jobs while retaining 40 existing positions. It is the third major project in this growing manufacturing corridor and another example of why companies continue choosing our region to invest and expand.
I was proud to support this project and work with our state and local economic development partners to help make it possible. These are good-paying jobs, new opportunities for families and investments that will benefit our communities for generations.
Supporting agriculture has also remained a major priority.
As a farmer myself, I understand the challenges producers face with rising input costs, uncertain markets and the financial pressures of harvest season. That is why I am encouraging farmers to explore a new Illinois Finance Authority grain storage loan program, which helps finance on-site storage facilities.
Having the ability to store grain gives farmers greater flexibility to sell when market conditions improve rather than being forced to accept lower prices at harvest.
I also welcome Governor Pritzker’s recent action to provide relief from rising dyed diesel costs during harvest season. His emergency proclamation is intended to help farmers facing additional fuel expenses when they can least afford them.
Another important opportunity is $1.8 million in Local Food Infrastructure Grants, which can help farmers and food producers invest in refrigerated transportation, community kitchens and other improvements that strengthen local food systems.
Helping families manage everyday expenses is equally important as colder weather approaches.
I am encouraging eligible residents to apply for the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), which provides financial assistance with heating and utility bills. Additional programs offer emergency reconnection assistance, furnace repairs and home weatherization services.
No family should have to choose between keeping their home warm and paying for groceries or other necessities. Find information about available energy assistance.
Food insecurity is another challenge we must continue addressing. Illinois has announced $26 million in funding through the Illinois Grocery Initiative to help establish grocery stores in underserved communities, reopen recently closed stores and upgrade equipment at existing locations. These investments can help families access fresh, affordable food while supporting neighborhood businesses.
Other local investments are making a difference as well.
Kankakee County is receiving $18,000 to promote tourism, local attractions and small businesses. I am also encouraging fire departments and ambulance services to apply for a statewide $6 million equipment grant program that can help provide essential lifesaving equipment, particularly in rural communities.
We also recently celebrated the opening of Ivanhoe Park in Manhattan and the groundbreaking for the Bourbonnais Parkway Business Park, two examples of how local partnerships and state investments are improving quality of life and creating economic opportunities.
Finally, I recently shared my thoughts on Illinois’ energy future in a column emphasizing the importance of affordability, reliability and a balanced approach. As energy demand grows, we must protect families from rising costs while ensuring businesses and communities have the dependable power they need.
Whether supporting farmers, attracting employers or helping families make ends meet, my focus remains on delivering practical results for the 40th District.
