The proposed South Suburban Airport in Monee has been on the drawing board for 30 years. Regional elected officials, residents, business owners and civic organizations will hold a news conference Sunday, Sept. 27, to update the state’s support of the SSA and ask the governor to fast-track construction.
The news conference will be at New Hope Christian Community Church, 4700 W. Court St., Monee, starting at 1:30 p.m.
Plans call for the South Suburban Airport to be North America’s first net-zero carbon airport, a goal hard to achieve in a built environment, making it a model for future airports.
“It could be an example of urban, suburban and rural communities working together for the good of everyone, where our area farmers grow the corn used to provide biofuel for airport operations,” said Donna Miller, 6th District Cook County commissioner and Democratic nominee for Illinois’ 2nd Congressional District.
Contrary to opponents’ argument that a South Suburban Airport would hurt O’Hare or Midway or Gary, the FAA’s said it would capture the region’s growing air capacity. That means the South Suburban Airport, Gary, Midway, O’Hare, Rockford and the Executive airports all could work together to increase capacity, relieve congestion and create an economic engine for the region.
“The Southland deserves the jobs and opportunity it was promised 30 years ago. Still no airport. Still no runway. Still no relief for two overcrowded airports stuck at capacity for a quarter century,” said Congresswoman Robin Kelly. “Economic opportunities delayed are economic opportunities missed and it is time for Illinois to stop stalling and start building.”
Confirmed to attend the news conference are Kelly, state Rep. Will Davis, state Rep. Debbie Meyers Martin, Miller, former Hazel Crest Mayor Vernard Alsberry, Executive Director of the Chicago Southland Chamber of Commerce Jennel Hooper, President of the Far South Suburban NAACP Gary Dingle and Executive Director of 10×10 to Win Mark Wallace, among others.
