As a gerontologist living in Chicago and someone who grew up in Whiteside County, I have spent my career thinking about what older adults need to live healthy, secure, and meaningful lives.

As Illinois voters consider the next gubernatorial election, I believe the needs of older residents deserve particular attention.

Gov. JB Pritzker’s administration has made aging policy a significant part of its agenda. In 2024, Pritzker initiated the development of a statewide Multi-Sector Plan for Aging, and in 2026 Illinois began implementing that plan.

It addresses issues that matter directly to older adults, including health care, housing, transportation, caregiving, community connections, and financial security.

There are also concrete efforts affecting seniors’ finances. Illinois expanded eligibility for its Senior Citizens Real Estate Tax Deferral Program, giving more qualifying older homeowners the ability to defer property taxes. The administration has also signed legislation addressing Medicaid and long-term care quality and financial stability. No administration gets everything right, and voters should consider the full record.

But from my perspective as a gerontologist, Illinois needs continued attention to the practical challenges of aging. For older adults and their families, I believe these issues should be central when deciding how to vote. I will be voting to reelect Governor Pritzker.
