Vote ‘No,’ Take The Dough: Illinois Republicans Tout Infrastructure Funding They Voted Against

Springfield, IL — Illinois House and Senate Republicans voted against the Rebuild Illinois Capital Program in 2019 and then turned around and celebrated the infrastructure dollars it sent to their own districts. Representatives Tony McCombie (IL-89), Chris Miller (IL-101) and Tom Weber (IL-64) and Senator Craig Wilcox (IL-32) have taken credit for a combined $256 million in funding for projects in their districts through Rebuild Illinois, despite voting against the legislative package.

“Republican legislators want it both ways: vote no on infrastructure funding, then brag about it when it benefits their communities,” said Democratic Party of Illinois spokesperson Gwen Pepin. “As they ask Illinoisans for another term in Springfield, voters deserve to know the truth. Their representatives voted against the very investments now improving their quality of life.”

The Rebuild Illinois Capital Program was passed in June 2019, investing a total of $25.4 billion in Illinois’ roads and bridges. The program has since created jobs and improved infrastructure across Illinois. Representatives McCombie, Miller and Weber and Senator Wilcox each voted against the legislative package.

The pattern repeats itself — vote no in Springfield, then take credit back home. Here’s how it played out:

  • In March 2026, Representative Tony McCombie celebrated $112,500 in infrastructure funds for Lanark that stemmed from Rebuild Illinois, despite having voted against it.

  • In October 2025, Representative Chris Miller celebrated his district receiving $35 million for Illinois Route 133 improvements through Rebuild Illinois, despite having voted against it.
  • In June 2024, Senator Craig Wilcox applauded his district receiving over $205 million from IDOT through Rebuild Illinois, despite having voted against it.
  • In August 2020, Representative Tom Weber touted McHenry County College receiving $15.8 million from the Rebuild Illinois Capital Plan, despite having voted against it.
