SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — Gov. JB Pritzker signed a bill into law Friday to help protect people who are allergic to diaper ingredients.

The law requires each package of diapers sold in Illinois to include a printed list of all ingredients.

"Families should have easy access to information about the products their children rely on," said Sen. Laura Fine (D-Glenview). "By requiring ingredient disclosure on diaper packaging, this law gives parents greater confidence and helps them make choices that are right for their children."

Sponsors said the Attorney General or state’s attorneys could ensure this change and collect civil penalties from companies violating the policy.

"This bill is vital for families to know what is actually going on their kid’s bodies, especially diapers that protect such sensitive areas," said Sen. Darby Hills (R-Barrington Hills). "I love the focus on supporting families and one more thing that new parents do not have to worry about when making health decisions."

Some lawmakers said this practice is normal in a wide variety of industries.

"At the end of the day, this is not a burdensome requirement," said Rep. Justin Cochran (D-Des Plaines). "List the materials that are in your diapers on the box they come in. That’s not hard."

The new law will take effect Jan. 1.
