State representative Stephanie Kifowit (D-Oswego), a United States Marine Corps veteran, released the following statement regarding assistant Senate majority leader Linda Holmes’ announcement that she will not seek reelection and will retire from the Illinois Senate at the conclusion of her current term in January 2027:

“Senator Linda Holmes has dedicated her career to serving the people of Illinois with integrity, compassion and an unwavering commitment to her constituents. Her retirement marks the conclusion of a remarkable chapter in public service, and I am grateful to have had the opportunity to know and work alongside her throughout much of that journey.

I first met Linda when she served on the Kane County Board and I was serving as an Alderman for the City of Aurora. Even then, it was clear that she cared deeply about her community and approached public service with a thoughtful, practical and people-first perspective. Over the years, I have had the privilege of watching her continue that commitment as a State Senator, always putting the needs of her constituents at the forefront of her work.

Throughout our time serving together, we partnered on legislation and worked on issues important to the residents of our shared communities. Linda has always been willing to listen, find common ground and work collaboratively to solve problems. She understood that public service is about helping people, and she never lost sight of that responsibility.

I also admire the grace, strength and determination she has shown while living with Multiple Sclerosis. Despite the challenges that come with the disease, Linda continued to serve with professionalism, dedication, and a positive spirit. Her perseverance is an inspiration to many.

While I will miss serving alongside Linda in Springfield, I am thankful for her friendship, partnership and decades of service to Kane County, the 42nd Senate District and the State of Illinois. On behalf of the residents of the 84th District, I thank senator Holmes for her many contributions and wish her continued health, happiness and success in the years ahead. Her legacy of service will leave a lasting impact on our communities for generations to come.”
