As the Illinois General Assembly concludes its spring legislative session, June offers an opportunity to reflect on some of the priorities that guided my work on behalf of Western Illinois families over the past several months. I want to highlight several issues that remained at the forefront of my efforts as we approached the end of session.

One of the most significant actions lawmakers took this spring was approving the Fiscal Year 2027 state budget. I supported this balanced budget because it includes important investments for working families while avoiding placing additional burdens on middle-class Illinoisans. The budget strengthens funding for higher education, increases support for school lunch programs, expands food assistance efforts at a time when federal SNAP benefits are facing cuts, and provides tax relief through a school sales tax holiday. It also asks large multinational corporations and technology companies that profit from Illinois consumers and their data to pay a fairer share into the state’s tax system. These are commonsense priorities that help ensure Western Illinois families receive the support they need while maintaining fiscal responsibility.

One of my top priorities this year has been protecting working families and ensuring fairness for Illinois workers. Last year, legislation I sponsored strengthened enforcement against contractors who fail to properly report payroll information on public works projects. This spring, we saw the results of that work, helping secure nearly $400,000 in back wages owed to Illinois workers. At a time when many families continue to face affordability challenges, making sure workers receive every dollar they have earned remains critically important.

Education has also remained a major focus. As chair of the Senate Education Appropriations Committee, I continue working to support our schools, colleges, and universities while addressing workforce shortages affecting classrooms across Illinois. This year, the Senate passed bipartisan legislation I sponsored to allow retired teachers to continue serving as substitute teachers for additional hours without affecting their retirement status. School districts across downstate Illinois are struggling to fill vacancies, and experienced retired educators can help provide immediate support for students and schools.

Public safety and community well-being remain priorities as well. June is Gun Violence Awareness and Prevention Month, and it serves as a reminder that reducing violence requires prevention, education, community partnerships, and evidence-based solutions. We must continue investing in programs that intervene before violence occurs while supporting law enforcement, community organizations, and local leaders working to keep neighborhoods safe. Prevention saves lives.

As summer begins, I also encourage residents to be mindful of seasonal safety concerns. Extreme heat can pose serious health risks, particularly for seniors, young children, and individuals with underlying health conditions. Staying hydrated, limiting outdoor activity during peak heat, and checking on vulnerable neighbors are simple steps that can help keep our communities safe during the hottest months of the year.

This month also brings important opportunities to recognize our shared history and values. Juneteenth on June 19 commemorates the end of slavery in the United States and offers an opportunity to reflect on our nation’s history while continuing the work of expanding opportunity and equality for all Americans. Learning from our history helps strengthen our communities and ensures future generations understand both the challenges and progress that have shaped our nation.

Father’s Day on June 21 provides an opportunity to recognize the fathers, grandfathers, mentors, and father figures who help guide and support families every day. Strong families remain the foundation of strong communities, and this observance gives us a chance to express gratitude for the many individuals who make a lasting difference in the lives of our children.

During Men’s Health Week, June 15-21, I encourage residents to prioritize preventive care, routine screenings, and healthy habits. Early detection and regular healthcare visits can make an enormous difference in long-term health outcomes. Taking care of our physical and mental health benefits not only individuals, but also families and communities throughout Western Illinois. June is also Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month, providing another reminder of the importance of education, early awareness, and support for families facing cognitive health challenges.

June also includes opportunities to honor service and sacrifice. As we mark the anniversary of D-Day and celebrate Flag Day on June 14, we remember the courage of those who served our nation and reflect on the freedoms secured through their sacrifice. Their legacy continues to inspire future generations of Americans.
