Lt. Gov. Juliana Stratton, the Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate, became the second high-profile elected official Thursday to call on Andrew S. Boutros, the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois, to resign amidst the fallout of the ‘Broadview Six’ case.
On Wednesday, Evanston Mayor Daniel Biss, the Democratic nominee for the 9th Congressional District, described what he viewed as “serious concerns about the integrity of the office [Boutros] leads,” calling on the Trump-appointed U.S. Attorney to resign from office.

Biss wrote in his statement that Boutros had lost credibility and public trust after he admitted in federal court last week to alleged prosecutorial misconduct related to the initial indictment against six anti-ICE protesters, one of whom was Biss’ primary opponent this March, Kat Abughazaleh of Rogers Park.
Michael Rabbitt, the 45th Ward Democratic Committeeperson and one of the six defendants in the case, also called on Boutros to resign, as did another defendant, Oak Park trustee Brian Straw.
Straw also described the need for accountability, writing in a social media post that “calling on Boutros to resign is not a particularly effective gesture,” and urging Illinois’ congressional delegation to “open investigations into the USAO” as a measure that “could bear fruit.”
Stratton, favored to win November’s election to succeed retiring Sen. Dick Durbin, tied Boutros directly to Trump in her statement, writing that the Department of Justice had “[used] the justice system as a means of political retribution” and that Boutros “should resign or be fired.”
“It’s more important than ever that professional standards are followed and the public can trust the charges and conduct coming from the U.S. Attorney’s Office,” Stratton said.
The Chicago Sun-Times first reported Stratton’s call for resignation.
While defense attorneys have argued for sanctions against the team of prosecutors who presented the case to the original grand jury, Boutros’ office was in hot water again this week for its reported ties to a DOJ referral into E. Jean Carroll, the former magazine columnist who accused Donald Trump of sexual assault and won a defamation case against him.
Several reports confirmed CNN’s initial report that the inquiry into Carroll had been directed to Boutros’ office in Chicago, though Boutros, in a statement Thursday, denied the reporting, writing that any claim he had opened a criminal investigation was “categorically false.”
The Chicago Tribune reported Thursday that Boutros’ office was, however, handling an investigation into Chicago-based American Future Republic, founded by billionaire Reid Hoffman, which assisted Carroll with legal costs related to her lawsuits against Trump.
Responding to the grand jury debacle that forced him to toss the case against four remaining protesters, Boutros announced “sweeping reforms” to his office’s grand jury practices, aimed at streamlining the process after intense criticism over its handling of the prosecution of protesters.
