State Sen. Patrick Joyce advanced legislation aimed at strengthening oversight of crematories following a 2025 investigation into improper body storage at a Chicago Heights facility. House Bill 4695 would expand the Illinois comptroller’s authority to investigate licensed crematories, inspect records and conduct unannounced inspections of facilities.
The measure would also allow the comptroller to suspend a crematory license if violations pose an imminent danger to the public and would impose additional penalties for violations. The legislation follows an investigation into Crown Cremations and Heights Crematory in Chicago Heights after reports surfaced that more than 100 bodies were improperly stored at the facility.
Joyce said the bill is intended to ensure proper operating standards within the funeral industry and help prevent similar incidents in the future. The bill passed the Senate Executive Committee on Wednesday.
