SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — A proposal in Springfield could help include railroad safety information in student handbooks.
Sponsors said residents have expressed concern about schools near railroads and ensuring students know the protocols in place to keep them safe.
House Bill 3743 would allow schools to opt out of the requirement if their school board finds that railroad safety is covered in the curriculum.
"It’s only about six paragraphs that would be added to the parent student handbook," said Sen. Suzy Glowiak Hilton (D-Western Springs). "It certainly is something that’s needed. It is not a curriculum mandate; it is just something that will be added to the student handbook."
This plan passed out of the Senate Education Committee on a 12-1 vote this week. It could receive a floor vote as early as Tuesday.
The measure passed unanimously out of the House last year.
