(25News Now) – High ranking Democrats and Republicans from Illinois were quick to condemn political violence after shots were fired Saturday night at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, attended by President Donald Trump.
The president and other top government officials attending the annual event were not injured.
Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker released the following statement:
“Violence has no place in our nation. Grateful to hear reports that everyone at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner is safe and the suspect is in custody. While we await more details, I’m thankful for the quick response by law enforcement.”
Darren Bailey, a Republican who’s running to replace Pritzker in November, said the following:
“Praying for the safety of President Trump, the First Lady, the Vice President, the Cabinet, and every guest at tonight’s WHCD. Grateful for the Secret Service agents who acted swiftly to secure the situation.”
Two congressmen representing Central Illinois, a Democrat and Republican, issued statements condemning political violence.
U.S. Rep. Eric Sorensen (D-Moline) released the following statement:
“I am very disturbed by the shooting near the President at tonight’s White House Correspondents’ Dinner. Political violence has no place in this country and must be condemned by everyone.”
U.S. Rep. Darin LaHood (R-Dunlap) praised the quick action of U.S. Secret Service agents and law enforcement officers who protect Trump and others.
“I’m incredibly grateful for the swift response from our Secret Service agents and law enforcement officers to protect the president, First Lady, and all those attending tonight’s White House Correspondents’ Dinner.
There is no place for political violence of any form in the United States. We must hold ourselves to a higher standard and work to lower the temperature, restore decency, and reject the normalization of hatred and anger in our politics."
Illinois Lt. Gov. Juliana Stratton, the Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate, said she too is grateful for law enforcement’s quick response.
“Political violence of any kind is unacceptable. My thoughts are with everyone affected, and I’m hoping for the safety of all in attendance.”
