LAKE FOREST, IL — State Sen. Julie Morrison is being recognized with two major honors highlighting her leadership on both public health policy and public safety efforts impacting communities across the northern suburbs.
Morrison, who represents parts of Lake and Cook counties including Lake Forest, Des Plaines and surrounding communities, was recently named a recipient of the 2026 Award for Outstanding Government Service by the American Medical Association. The national award recognizes lawmakers who demonstrate exceptional leadership in advancing public health.
“I am honored to receive this award for my work and commitment to public health,” Morrison said. “It represents the positive impacts made on our communities through collaboration with health care professionals, patient advocates and stakeholders.”
Morrison was nominated by Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science, citing her work to improve health outcomes for vulnerable populations and her leadership on issues such as preventive care, disability rights and children’s health.
A key initiative highlighted in her nomination is her role in securing $1 million in state funding to establish a first-of-its-kind pediatric clinic at the Lake County Children’s Advocacy Center. The clinic provides specialized care for young survivors of sexual assault in a trauma-informed setting, helping families avoid long emergency room waits and ensuring more consistent follow-up care.
Local health leaders say the model is already setting a new standard. “We are setting the state’s standard of care for the outpatient setting,” said Jeff Espina, a clinical leader involved in the effort.
In addition to national recognition for her health care work, Morrison was also recently named the first-ever Legislator of the Year by the Illinois State Police Command Officers Association.
The honor reflects her work with law enforcement on legislation designed to improve safety for first responders and the public. Morrison pointed to her collaboration on measures such as Scott’s Law, which requires drivers to move over for stopped emergency vehicles displaying warning lights.
“Together, we have been able to strengthen laws that protect first responders and keep our communities safe,” Morrison said in a statement thanking the association.
Morrison has represented the 29th Senate District since 2013 and currently serves in a leadership role as Majority Whip in the Senate Democratic Caucus. She also chairs the Senate Insurance Committee and co-chairs the Children’s Health Caucus.
With both honors, Morrison said her focus remains on delivering results for families in the northern suburbs — whether through expanding access to health care or strengthening protections for those who serve on the front lines.
