- An Illinois nonprofit is closing three facilities because of reduced funding, a spokesperson said.
- The social services organization provides support to vulnerable groups like refugees and immigrants.
- The organization said the consolidation is to ensure long-term operational efficiency.
A nonprofit organization will close three of its Illinois facilities this spring, resulting in layoffs of more than 100 workers.
Heartland Human Care Services provides human rights services to vulnerable populations, including refugees, immigrants and individuals experiencing homelessness.
The social services organization plans to lay off 140 workers in conjunction with closing three facilities in Chicago, according to information reported Feb. 17 to the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity.
Heartland spokesperson Robin Carroll attributed the closures to reduced funding.
“After careful consideration, we made the difficult decision to consolidate sites to ensure greater operational efficiency and long-term sustainably,” Carroll said.
Affected facilities include: 66 employees at the International Children Center at 1620 West Chase Ave., Chicago; 44 workers at the International Children Center at Beverly at 1209 West 98th St., Chicago; and 30 employees at Casa Heartland at Princeton at 1628 West Morse Ave, Chicago.
The layoffs will take place April 1. Carroll said Heartland is committed to supporting affected workers through the transition.
“We are deeply proud of the dedication, compassion, and professionalism our staff bring to this critical work every day,” she added. “We remain committed to maintaining the high-quality care provided to the children we serve and to minimizing any impact on their well-being.”
