House votes to honor Rockford mail carrier Jay Larson

The U.S. House of Representatives has passed legislation to rename the Harrison Avenue Post Office in Rockford in honor of letter carrier Jay Larson, who was killed while on duty, according to a community announcement.

The bill, led by Rep. Darin LaHood of the 16th Congressional District and Rep. Eric Sorensen of the 17th, aims to commemorate Larson’s 25 years of service to the community.

Larson was fatally stabbed in March 2024 while delivering mail. He had served as a letter carrier for the Harrison Avenue Post Office for 25 years.

Actions follow year after death

LaHood and Sorensen originally introduced the legislation in the 118th Congress. They reintroduced it on March 27 to mark the one-year anniversary of Larson’s death.

"Over his 25 years as a letter carrier, Jay Larson exemplified the best of our Midwestern values and fully embraced his role as a public servant," LaHood said. "His work ethic and compassion for others during his time with the United States Postal Service were unmatched."

LaHood said he was proud to co-lead the legislation with Sorensen to honor Larson’s legacy and the positive impact he made on the Rockford community.

"I am grateful to my colleagues in the House of Representatives for supporting this legislation and I look forward to it being signed into law," he said.

Sorensen echoed LaHood’s sentiments, emphasizing the lasting impact Larson had on the community.

"Jay Larson remains missed by his neighbors who remember his warm smile and welcoming face as he delivered mail for more than 25 years," Sorensen said. "We’re now another step closer to permanently honoring his life, legacy, and years of admirable service to the Rockford community."
