Civil rights leader Rev. Jesse Jackson has been moved into hospice care.

A Facebook post stated that the activist is “surrounded by dedicated staff, his loving wife Jackie Jackson, and those who continue to uplift him” and that Jackson “remains wrapped in the same steadfast spirit that has defined his life’s work.”

The 84-year-old was admitted to Northwestern Memorial Hospital last month, and has been undergoing treatment for progressive supranuclear palsy, a neurological condition that he has been managing for more than a decade.

Jackson is known for his civil rights advocacy, including his work with the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and Fred Hampton. He formed civil rights organizations Operation PUSH in 1971 and the Rainbow Coalition in 1984, which merged in 1996. He stepped down as president of the Rainbow PUSH Coalition in July 2023 due to health concerns.

Jackson was diagnosed with supranuclear palsy this year after initially being misdiagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2013. The condition affects body movements, balance and walking and eye movements, according to the National Institutes of Health.
