Gov. JB Pritzker suggested the 25th Amendment be invoked after President Donald Trump told military leaders they should use cities as “training grounds” and said deploying troops in major cities is necessary due to “a war from within.”
Pritzker called the idea “inane” and said of Trump, “I’m concerned for his health. It appears not only has dementia set in, he’s copying the tactics of Vladimir Putin.”
Mayor Brandon Johnson, who was appearing at a City Colleges event with Pritzker, called Trump “unstable and unhinged."
The mayor and governor’s remarks were in response to the president’s appearance at Marine Corps Base Quantico in Virginia today before a gathering of the nation’s top military leadership.
Trump said American cities run by Democrats should serve as “training grounds” for troops as he and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth addressed the more than 800 military leaders.
“I told Pete,” referring to Hegseth, “we should use some of these dangerous cities as training grounds for our military,” Trump said. “The ones that are run by radical left Democrats — what they’ve done to San Francisco, Chicago, New York, Los Angeles. They’re very unsafe places, and we’re gonna straighten them out one by one. This is gonna be a major part for some people in this room. That’s a war, too. It’s war from within.”
The 25th Amendment allows for the removal of the president if he or she is unable to perform the duties of the office.
The governor’s 25th Amendment comments come at about the one-hour mark in this video from today’s event:
