SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WCIA) — Governor JB Pritzker said he may take action on implementing new hemp regulations.
The governor pushed for a bill regulating delta-8 products to only be sold at dispensaries earlier this year. It passed the Senate, but Illinois Speaker of the House Chris Welch did not bring it up for a vote on the house floor after a dramatic argument behind closed doors.
Many hemp businesses were against the bill, saying it would ruin their industry. Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson also opposed the bill.
Gov. Pritzker said he does not want to wait before more people take intoxicating hemp products.
"It literally is making our children sick, and it is a shame on legislators and on this state that we are not already doing something about it," Pritzker said Thursday at an unrelated news conference. "We need help from the legislature to make it happen, or if not, we may need to impose executive authority to try to shut those sales of intoxicating hemp down."
Hemp was legalized federally as a part of the 2018 Farm Bill.
