Earlier this month, 84th District State Rep. Stephanie Kifowit announced her candidacy for the position of Illinois Comptroller.
Kifowit says the decision to run for comptroller was a big step for her political career.
"I’ve just been so proud of the faith that the people of Illinois put in me as as first an alderman with the city of Aurora and now as a state representative that I just know that the people in the state of Illinois can have faith in me,, that I will always have their back and and work hard for them and make sure that the taxpayers know their tax dollars are being spent wisely."
Kifowit mentions that her background in finance and work on appropriations and pension reform in the General Assembly help make it clear that she can serve all Illinoisans and make sure they have a seat at the table to ensure the state’s finances are used effectively.
"I know how devastating fiscal mismanagement can be because I served during the budget impasse of the Rauner years. And those two and a half years showed just how important the position of comptroller is to everyday families and how important it is to have someone who is going to fight for working people, be a fiscal hawk like I’ve been my whole time on the General Assembly all twelve years, and then before that, as an alderwoman of the city of Aurora and hold our government accountable independently."
In July, current Illinois Comptroller Susana Mendoza announced she was not seeking an additional term in 2026 and would take some time to determine her political future. Kifowit and Chicago State Rep. Margaret Croke are the only two candidates who have announced their intention to run for comptroller.
