State Sen. Laura Murphy (D-28th)

Longtime Maine Township Democratic committeeman Laura Murphy will not seek reelection for the local party position this coming spring. Instead, she is endorsing Des Plaines Mayor Andrew Goczkowski for the job.

A few weeks ago, Goczkowski announced that he was running for committeeman. A short time later, Murphy said she is running for reelection to the four-year post she has held for the last 23 years.

“It’s time to get new blood in,” said Murphy late last week. “ My leadership responsibilities in the state senate are growing. I don’t have the time.”

Murphy succeeded Andrew Przsybylo, former mayor of Niles, as Democratic committeeman.

Goczkowski is going on his third year as mayor of Des Plaines. He has served as president of the Maine Township Regular Democratic Organization for the last three years.

“In those days there was not a Democrat to be had in elective office,” added Murphy referring to local Republicans’ stranglehold on township government. Currently, Maine Township office holders are Democrats.

Murphy, a 10-year state senator, is also one of four Democrats in the state who serve as assistant majority leader. In that role, she serves on several committees.

Murphy said she has no plans to run for statewide office. “I like where I’m at”. She is presently in the first year of a four-year term she was elected to in 2024. “I will run again in 2028,” she said.
