State Rep. Hoan Huynh (D-13th) of Chicago announced his run for Congress earlier this month before a group of 300 in Chicago, as a crowded field of Democratic candidates running for the seat of retiring U.S. Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-9th) grows.

The 9th Congressional District includes parts of Cook, Lake, and McHenry counties, including portions of Des Plaines, Niles, Park Ridge, Glenview, Mount Prospect, Arlington Heights, and Prospect Heights in the Journal & Topics coverage area. Schakowsky has represented the 9th District since 1999 and has not endorsed any Democrat.

Huynh is the son of Vietnamese refugees. He earned his bachelor’s degree in sociology from Yale University in 2012 and his master’s degree in policy from Harvard University in 2014. He was first sworn into office in January 2023.

Andrew Townsend, Huynh’s spokesman, said the state rep knocked on nearly all the doors in his North Side Chicago district to speak with voters during the last election cycle.

Huynh’s district includes the neighborhoods of West Edgewater, Uptown, Andersonville, Buena Park, Sheridan Park, Ravenswood, Northcenter, Wrigleyville, Lake View, Southport, Lincoln Square, Bowmanville, Winnemac, Arcadia Terrace, Budlong Woods, and West Ridge.

Each Illinois State Senate district includes two House districts. Huynh’s 13th District sits inside the 7th State Senate District. State Sen. Mike Simmons (D-7th) also recently announced he was running for Schakowsky’s seat.

When asked about fundraising, Townsend said Huynh deliberately made his announcement after July 4, so as not to be required to make immediate disclosures. Although Townsend would not disclose a campaign fundraising total, he said the campaign has taken in more than 1,100 contributions.

On his website, Huynh lists his legislative priorities, including expansion of economic opportunity, job creation, environmental justice, protecting reproductive healthcare, LGBTQ+, and immigrant and refugee rights, public safety and gun violence prevention, affordable housing, transit infrastructure, and expanding mental health access.

His campaign announcement said Huynh would “fight for working families, affordable housing, accessible health care, and bold climate and infrastructure investments. His campaign will focus on building a multiracial, multigenerational coalition ready to meet the moment and deliver for the next generation.”

In early 2024, State Rep. Jennifer Gong-Gershowitz (D-17th) of Glenview was appointed to lead a Democratic Party working group in the House looking at how Illinois can respond to what was then a continuing stream of buses of primarily Venezuelan migrants and asylum seekers being sent to the area from the U.S.-Mexico border. The nine-member working group, appointed by Illinois House Speaker Emanuel “Chris” Welch, included Huynh.

Previously announced 9th District Democratic candidates include State Sen. Laura Fine (D-9th), Evanston Mayor Daniel Biss, and social media influencer Kat Abughazaleh, Simmons, Skokie resident Bushra Amiwala, and former FBI agent Phil Andrew of Wilmette.
