ROCKFORD, Ill. (WREX) — The Trump Administration officially terminated an LGBTQ specific option on the 988 Suicide & Crisis Hotline, prompting Democratic lawmakers to voice their concerns.

The Trump Administration officially terminated an LGBTQ specific option on the 988 Suicide & Crisis Hotline, prompting Democratic lawmakers to voice their concerns.

This program, designed for callers under 25, connected them with counselors trained in LGBTQ issues.

The specialized LGBTQ hotline began as a pilot program in October 2022, following the launch of the 988 Lifeline in July of the same year.

Illinois Sen. Dick Durbin highlighted the critical need for immediate responses on suicide hotlines. He warned that funding cuts could result in more lives lost.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) announced last month the program’s closure, stating it would no longer separate youth services but instead "focus on serving all help seekers."

Durbin criticized the decision, saying, "When it comes to suicide hotlines, you’ve got to be there at the instant they’re needed. You’ve got to have a responsible voice on the other end of the phone to save a life. Sadly, people will die as a result of this decision to refuse funding."

A spokesperson for The Department of Health and Human Service, of which the SAMHSA explained:

"The Press 3 option had run out of congressionally directed funding and added that continued operation of the specialized service would have required reallocating funds away from the main 988 Lifeline, possibly resulting in massive reductions in service."

While 988 has discontinued its LQBTQ youth service, those seeking help can still contact nonprofit The Trevor Project for such services.
