Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – Just before midnight Saturday night, the Illinois General Assembly passed a state budget for fiscal year 2026.
House Majority Leader Robyn Gabel (D-Evanston) said the $55 billion plan covers the needs while being cautious.
“We do not know the full extent of the cuts that Washington is preparing,” she said. “We do anticipate that healthcare access and infrastructure will be most directly impacted.”
State Rep. John Cabello (R-Machesney Park) has heard quite enough. He said it’s “B.S.” to blame President Trump and his administration for everything. He said supermajority Democrats are again rushing the process and hiding things they don’t want people to see.
The new budget drops a healthcare plan for undocumented immigrants. Gabel said it cost far more than anticipated, but State Rep. Bill Hauter (R-Morton) said the whole thing was a “disastrous boondoggle.”
The budget takes effect July 1.
SB 2510 (spending) has passed the House, 75-41, and the Senate, 34-21.
HB 2755 (revenue) has passed the House, 71-43, and the Senate, 31-25.
HB 1075 (budget implementation) has passed the House, 74-41, and the Senate, 32-23.
