SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WMBD) — Gov. JB Pritzker joined officials from the United Kingdom to sign a Memorandum of Understanding on Tuesday.
The memorandum was signed by Pritzker and British Consul General Richard Hyde, and focuses on advancing manufacturing in energy, technology and life science sectors, a state news release stated.
Pritzker said it’s important for the state to build and maintain healthy relationships with its trade partners.
"Signing this MOU is the next step in growing our strong trade relationship that will benefit both Illinois and the UK, and I look forward to seeing how this agreement will spur additional opportunities across sectors," Pritzker said.
Pritzker set out on a trade mission with several Illinois business and education leaders in July 2023. At the time, he met with Minister of State Nigel Huddleston to agree to the initial terms of the memorandum that was signed Tuesday.
Hyde said this will improve the state’s already strong trade relations with the United Kingdom.
"This agreement aims to take our trade from good to great," Hyde said. "It is a plan of action to promote mutual growth, the number one priority of the British Government."
Illinois exported more than $2.6 billion in goods to the United Kingdom last year, which makes it the eighth-largest export partner of the state.
