SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — A plan by Illinois House Republicans would require all teachers to report gun violence threats on school grounds.
This bill was crafted by State Rep. C.D. Davidsmeyer (R-Jacksonville), when an incident happened in his district. A student, while being bullied, threatened to shoot the bully with a gun. When a teacher was notified of the incident, they did not report it to anyone.
The policy would require all teachers once learning of a gun threat, to notify the principal who would then notify the students parents/guardians.
"I think as a law abiding gun owner I look at this and say we have to do everything possible to keep gun violence from happening," Davidsmeyer said.
The GOP Rep. has also thanked Democrats for their support of the bill and their willingness to work with Republicans.
"I didn’t think in a gun violence prevention committee we would have the chance to have good conversations, but [we’ve] had a lot of good conversations on preventative measures to protect kids while trying not to infringe on anyone’s rights," Davidsmeyer said.
In the proposal, law enforcement would also be involved in the conversation, but the Republican Rep is looking to remove their involvement with an amendment.
The plan passed out of the House gun violence prevention committee unanimously. It now heads to the House floor where lawmakers could talk about it in the coming weeks.
