CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — The Department of Education’s future is up in the air. President Donald Trump said he has started the process to dissolve the department and "bring schools back to the states."
Governor JB Pritzker was at Centennial High School earlier today talking about a different policy. But — Pritzker said he needed to talk about this issue since he was at a public school.
He said the Trump Administration will be making deep cuts to public education across the country. And, Pritzker said less money for these schools will greatly impact students in the state.
"Students in rural communities who rely on federal funding to keep their schools open, students with disabilities and special needs who receive additional support in their classrooms, low-income students who depend on Pell Grants to earn their college degrees, all will be affected," Pritzker said.
During Trump’s campaign — he called for the states to take over the role of managing money for the groups Pritzker mentioned instead of the federal government.
