Ill. (WTVO) — Illinois Representative Eric Sorenson responded to mass National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) layoffs on Friday.
NOAA is responsible for issuing warnings about severe storms, like hurricanes.
Sorenson is a former meteorologist who said he would fight against the cuts.
"The reckless decision to fire NOAA and National Weather Service employees puts American lives at risk," said Sorenson.
Sorenson said the services those agencies provide are needed.
"Weather forecasting is a public service that every American deserves, and that gutting these agencies will do irreparable harm," Sorenson explained.
Several reports said about 5% of the agency’s staff was fired.
