SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WCIA) — "Hundreds" are expected to attend Wednesday night’s Illinois Legislative Black Caucus (ILBC) soiree in Springfield.

Illinois State Senator Lakesia Collins, Joint Chairman of the ILBC, will be joined by the full ILBC and the Illinois Legislative Caucus Foundation. The group aims to unify divisions and find common ground, as well as establish new ideas and goals for the upcoming year.

"While our nation is deeply divided, Illinois remains one of few states that is primed, energized and prepared for the challenges ahead," Collins said. "However, it is imperative that we recognize that there are still divisions that reflect differences in ideology."

Collins added that some may attempt to reduce the importance of their soiree, but it actually serves as an important tool to stay united.

"We can only prevail against these challenges by enhancing our numerous variations in diversity and enhancing the core values that bring us together," Collins said. "While many may attempt to marginalize the mere concept of a soiree, the ILBC views it as a methodology to sharpen our agenda and be fully united for the journey ahead.

Gala attendees can expect food, live music and other surprises. And the ILBC will officially present its new leadership to the public.

“It is the mission of the ILBCF to ensure that African American communities throughout Illinois are aware of legislative changes, and to host legislative forums and other events where we can inform residents about changes in state government," said Paul Williams, ILBCF Board Chairman. "The Soiree is our evening social that allows us to coalesce people from all walks of life for the purpose of understanding the core mission of the Illinois Legislative Black Caucus and its current initiatives."

The new ILBCF leadership includes:

  • Joint Chairman — Senator Lakesia Collins
  • Joint Vice-Chairman — Representative Rita Mayfield
  • Senate Chairman — Senator Willie Preston
  • House Chairman — Representative Justin Slaughter
  • ILBC Treasurer — Senator Adraine Johnson
  • ILBC Secretary — Representative Kimberly Du. Buclet
  • ILBC Sergeant of Arms — Representative Will Davis

Joint Chairman Collins added that while she believes the ILBC will be challenged, the group is powerful when united.

“The work ahead is not easy, but together, we are powerful," she said. "The ILBC will continue to be a force for change, using our collective strength to break down barriers and build a future that reflects the values of equity, opportunity, and justice for all."

The soiree begins at 6 p.m. and will be held in the Bank of Springfield Center, located at 1 Convention Center Plaza.
