CHARLESTON, Ill. (WCIA) — An Illinois Representative is expressing his grief after his cousin died in Central Illinois last weekend.
Rep. Kam Buckner (D-Chicago) said Yahacov Dennis was his younger cousin. He described him on X (formerly Twitter) as a "bright and kind soul."
Charleston Police said they performed a well-being check for 22-year-old Dennis Saturday afternoon. During the check, department leaders said he disarmed one of their officers and used the gun to shoot himself.
"You send your kids to school dreaming of their future, imagining them coming back in a cap & gown—not in a body bag," Buckner wrote. "He can’t tell his story, so we will."

The representative said he is owed "complete answers, absolute justice & a legacy that reflects the love and pride we feel for him."
"While there are still more questions than answers, one thing that is certain is how deeply we loved him," he added.
Illinois State Police have released the body camera footage on Thursday morning. They are investigating the incident and will hand over their results for the Coles County State’s Attorney’s office to review once it is complete.
