ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — The City of Rockford hosted an event highlighting the importance of pre-apprenticeship programs on Thursday.
The "Tightening Tool Belts" event brought government agencies and union contractors together to give more information on opportunities for those looking to work in the trades.
Topics ranged from compliance issues to trends in building trades.
Organizers said it was a good opportunity for those considering a career.
"They’re meeting with the pre-apprenticeship program, they’re meeting with established contractors, and they’re able to navigate that process if they are interested in the pre-apprenticeship program," said City of Rockford’s Michaela Harris. "The contractors who are hiring from those pre-apprenticeship programs, the union trades that are affiliated with those pre-apprenticeship programs. So, it gives them a lot of knowledge and [informs them on] what industry [they] would even want to be in."
Several local organizations provide apprenticeship programs, including Workforce Connection and YouthBuild Rockford.
