CHICAGO, Ill. (WTVO) — Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker slammed Indiana Wednesday, referring to the Hoosier State as a "low-wage" state that "doesn’t protect workers."
"[Indian is] a state that does not provide health care for people when they’re in need," Pritzker said during a press conference in Chicago.
The governor’s remarks come after Indiana House Speaker Todd Houston announced a plan to re-draw state boundaries to include 33 Illinois counties that have voted to secede from the Land of Lincoln.
"I don’t think that’s attractive for anyone in Illinois, where wages are higher and the standard of living is higher, and we do provide health care for people in need," Pritzker said.
The proposal for Illinois counties to secede and join Indiana was announced earlier this week by Indiana House Speaker Todd Houston.
Huston’s HB1008 would create the Indiana-Illinois Boundary Adjustment Commission, which would discuss and recommend whether it is advisable to adjust boundaries between the two states.
"It’s a stunt. It’s to going to happen," Pritzker said.
In order for the process to work, the Illinois General Assembly would also need to pass similar legislation.
“We think there might be some interest in the Illinois Legislature to do that,” Huston said.
The bill will be heard next week in Indiana’s House Government and Regulatory Reform Committee.
