SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WCIA) — State Troopers may soon be required to tell witnesses they are still being recorded from dash cameras if a bill on Governor J.B. Pritzker’s desk is signed into law.
A bill that passed both chambers of the legislature unanimously requires State Police officers to tell victims their car’s dash cameras will continue to stay on and record if they ask to turn their body cameras off.
When talking to law enforcement officers in Illinois, victims and witnesses can request to turn off body cameras. The SAFE-T Act, the major law enforcement reform package signed into law in 2021, required body cameras for all law enforcement agencies in the state.
Due to certain issues with ISP’s body camera service, another bill was needed to change the law.
Also in the bill is eliminating a loophole in the state’s child pornography laws to criminalize adults who share a minor’s nude selfies. All selfies were previously exempt from the state law.
The full bill can be found here.
