SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WICS) — Starting on Wednesday, January 1, electronic cigarette companies will be prohibited from marketing their products to youths in a way that could deceive parents or guardians.

We asked our followers to share their thoughts on the new law. From the responses we received, most guardians and parents responded well to the passage of the law. Some pointed out how some electronic devices are being designed to look like every-day school supplies, like erasers or highlighters.

Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul says, "In a 2023 study, 89.4% of students who reported using e-cigarettes said they used flavored vape products."

Lookalike products will now have to find a new marketing strategy.

In their 2024 report, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, along with the CDC reported a drop in e-cigarette usage in middle and high schoolers from 2023 to 2024.

According to the report, more than one in every four youths use an e-cigarette device daily. It also shows eight out of ten current e-cigarette users surveyed used flavored e-cigarettes or "vapes." These flavors include common dessert names or fruits that can appeal to teens or kids.

The law fall sunder the Preventing Youth Vaping Act, as Illinois continues to push for change against underage tobacco and nicotine usage.
