QUINCY, Ill. (KHQA) — In August, Illinois Governor JD Pritzker signed a bill to prohibit landlords from retaliating against their tenants. It will now go into effect on January 1, 2025.

As a part of a new law, there are four things that landlords will be banned from doing in retaliation. Terminating leases, increasing rent, decreasing services, or threatening lawsuits are prohibited.

The new law also states that landlords can’t refuse a lease after a tenant complains about code violations or seeks help from elected leaders.

The bill passed out of the Senate 34-19 and out of the House 63-38.
