One ballot question on Tuesday’s ballot appeared in seven Illinois counties, and each county approved it. The issue? Secession.
Most of the counties voting in favor of leaving the Land of Lincoln are in the St. Louis area. But one of the seven is Iroquois County, just south of Kankakee. The question on the ballot revealed the true target of the measure, asking about separating from Cook County to form a new state.
According to Chicago media, the movement’s not actually moving anywhere. Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul has said non-home-rule counties don’t have the power to secede, according to the 1970 constitution.
