State Comptroller honors three Illinoisans for Hispanic Heritage Month

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WCIA) — State Comptroller Susana Mendoza honored the contributions of three Hispanic American trailblazers from Central Illinois Tuesday.

Mendoza’s office held a ceremony celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month. The three who were honored included Héctor Javier Maymí-Sugrañes, the Dean of Libraries and General Studies at Western Illinois University, Yolanda Alonso, a blogger for Latinos en BloNo, and Carolina Huser, the Visionary Society & Development Manager for the Peoria Riverfront Museum.

The honorees said at the ceremony they try to be role models for the Latino community.

"I want to be an example for all those humans out there trying to make a means for themselves and trying to make an impact in the community," Huser said. "Also for little girls, as my two daughters to know that you can make an impact and you can make a name for yourself if you work hard and do it with the right reasons so today has this an incredible honor."

Mendoza shared what it means to her being the first independently elected statewide Latina official in Illinois history.

"It’s our stories that inspire others who look like us who may be new to our state, even new to our country" she said at the ceremony. "Our successes stand to the testament to what can be achieved to Latinos."

Past honorees include Jesus Garza, the mayor of Arcola.
