ST. LOUIS (KMOX) – Illinois voters will be asked in November if they would support a constitutional amendment raising the income tax on the state’s wealthiest of citizens in effect providing property tax relief.

In November, Illinois voters will be asked if they would support an additional 3% income tax on those making more than $1 million a year.

Illinois State Rep. Jay Hoffman (D) says the trade off would be property tax relief.

"To help homeowners stay in their own homes and not be forced out because of the ever increasing burden of property taxes," said Hoffman on Total Information A.M.

The ballot question is essentially a voter opinion poll to direct legislators on what the people want.

A voter approved referendum to raise the state’s minimum wage was taken up and passed by the Illinois legislature back in 2014.

In 2021, the State Revenue Department says more than 77,000 people in Illinois had an income more than $1 million.
