ROCKFORD, Ill. (WREX) — Congressman Eric Sorensen recently visited the Rockford Family Peace Center to gain insights into the organization’s vital work supporting survivors of domestic and sexual violence.
The visit aimed to explore ways Sorensen can advocate for victims in Congress, highlighting the importance of understanding community needs.
During his visit, Sorensen emphasized the significance of firsthand knowledge in shaping effective policy. He referenced data indicating that crime rates in Rockford have decreased since the Family Peace Center opened its doors in 2020.
“We’re seeing now the cause and effect when a child is growing up in an abusive home; they are so much more likely to perpetrate crime, violent crime, domestic abuse, and sexual abuse," said U.S. Representative Eric Sorensen (D-17th Dist.)
This understanding reinforces the need for comprehensive support systems for both victims and their families.
The Peace Center aims to educate lawmakers about the essential resources it provides. This includes child care services, emotional support, and assistance for victims navigating the justice system.
“When we can break that cycle, we can see children rise up through it and say to abused women, ‘We’ve got a place; we’re going to be able to care for you,’” said Sorensen. His commitment to supporting the Peace Center’s mission reflects a broader initiative to tackle the root causes of violence in the community.
By helping lawmakers grasp the center’s impact, the organization hopes to secure more funding and resources for those in need.
Rockford Family Peace Center plans to expand into a new building next year, aiming to introduce more youth-focused resources to further combat violent crime. This expansion will enhance their capacity to provide critical support to those affected by domestic and sexual violence.
If you are or have been a victim of abuse, know that help is available. The Rockford Family Peace Center is dedicated to providing the necessary support and resources to empower survivors and help them reclaim their lives.
