URBANA — It looks like DeShawn Williams will have some competition in the 2025 mayoral race after all.
Fellow Democrat Annie Feldmeier Adams announced her plans to seek the nomination on Friday.
“I am running for mayor to build a resilient, thriving, and welcoming city for all,” said Adams, who works in marketing and communications for UI’s Grainger College of Engineering. “I will advocate for the people of Urbana’s right to safety, dignity, and prosperity and the fair and respectful treatment of our city employees. We all belong here and deserve a voice in our government."
Her main priorities include "sustainable growth," housing, transportation, safety, "racial equity and social justice," "social health and well being," and "environmental resilience."
Adams’ campaign website features an endorsement from current Urbana Mayor Diane Marlin.
"Annie F. Adams has experience, vision, and a passion for public service," Marlin said. "Most of all, she loves living in the City of Urbana and has worked for the past 10 years to improve safety, celebrate neighborhoods, and bring people together through the arts in our community. Annie is practical, accessible, and straight-talking. I’m proud to support Annie F. Adams for Mayor of Urbana!"
Up until Friday, Williams had been the only candidate in the race, with Alderman James Quisenberry deciding not to run earlier this year.
Adams and her husband, Bruce, have lived in Urbana since 2015.
Her community involvement has included serving on the Urbana Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Commission, co-founding Imbibe Urbana and Urbana First Fridays and starting the Urbana Amble: Front Yard Garden and Art Tour.
She said that such events "encourage conversation and create community pride."
“What makes Urbana great is her people," Adams said. "We are distinctly independent with a vibrant and practical spirit. We want to see our neighbors thrive.”
