IL AFL-CIO President Tim Drea and Secretary-Treasurer Pat Devaney released the following statement reflecting on Pride Month and the contributions of LGBTQ+ workers to the labor movement:

“As we wrap up Pride Month, the IL AFL-CIO reaffirms its commitment to equality, dignity, and inclusion for all workers.

Collective bargaining is the best tool to prevent discrimination and provide good, union jobs with a pathway to the middle class. To date, the LGBTQ+ community faces significant economic disparities. LGBTQ+ adults are far worse economically than their cisgender and heterosexual counterparts with one in five adults living in poverty.

This Pride Month, and always, we honor the legacy of our LGBTQ+ members of the labor movement and our elected leaders who continue to make Illinois a safe space for LGBTQ+ workers. The Illinois labor movement will never tolerate hate and proudly stands in solidarity with all workers and the LGBTQ+ community.”
