CICERO, Ill. (WMBD) — Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias announced he is awarding $2 million worth of grants to underserved libraries around the state on Thursday.
Giannoulias’ office identified 113 libraries eligible to receive the grants, which can be used for needed technology enhancements. The grants that are given are either $27,500 or $12,500.
Some of the local libraries that are eligible to receive the funding include:
- Parlin-Ingersoll Public Library in Canton is eligible for $27,500.
- South Pekin Public Library is eligible for $12,500.
- Galesburg Public Library is eligible for $27,500.
- Lacon Public Library District is eligible for $12,500.
- Toluca Public Library District is eligible for $12,500.
- The Bond Public Library in Wenona is eligible for $12,500.
- The John Mosser Public Library District in Abingdon is eligible for $12,500.
“Libraries play a significant role in our communities, so it’s imperative that they evolve to meet the needs of residents and expand their offerings, particularly when it comes to technology,” Giannoulias said. “We have a responsibility to ensure that all communities, regardless of their location or wealth, have access to the best library programming beyond just written materials. These grants will help narrow digital divides.”
The grants can fund new hardware or software, expand online collections, or increase Wi-Fi capacity and internet accessibility, among other things.
The eligible libraries must file a plan for the use of grant funds by June 14. Libraries will have two years to spend the grant money.
