When Mark Walker was appointed to fill Anne Gillespie’s seat as 27th District state senator after Gov. JB Pritzker appointed Gillespie as head of the state insurance department, Walker’s state house seat became vacant. A meeting of local Democratic committee persons is expected to fill that vacancy on Wednesday, June 5.

The open appointment meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. Wednesday, June 5 in Meeting Room A of the Mount Prospect Public Library, 10 S. Emerson St. Those wishing to attend are asked to send an RSVP via email to ElkGroveTownshipDemocrats@gmail.com.

Because Walker is a Democrat, Democratic township committee persons will hold a weighted vote to make the appointment based on how much of each township lies within the 53rd District.

For that vote, Elk Grove Township Democratic Committeeman Ted Mason holds the largest weighted vote, about 45%. As such, Mason organized the meeting of committee persons.

As reported in the Journal last month Mason announced the vacancy and said he would accept resumes and cover letters from those interested in filling the vacancy for consideration. The deadline to submit those resumes was Tuesday, May 28.

Mason said he received seven resumes and he expects those seven candidates to attend the meeting, give statements, and take questions from the committee people.

Other Democratic committee persons expected to cast weighted votes for the next 53rd state rep are State Sen. Mark Walker (D-27th), who is also the Wheeling Township Democratic committeeman who has about 30% of the weighted vote, Palatine Township Democratic Committee person Maria Galo holds 17% of the weighted vote, Maine Township Democratic Committee person Laura Murphy, and Schaumburg Township Democratic Committeeman Mike Cudzik, both with about a 2% weighted vote each.

The 53rd District includes parts of the municipalities of Arlington Heights, Des Plaines, Mount Prospect, Palatine, and Rolling Meadows.
