SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (KHQA) — The Illinois Senate has approved a new state budget for the upcoming 2025 fiscal year during a Sunday session with a vote of 38-21

All but two democrats voted in favor of the budget bill, with Senators Suzy Glowiak Hilton and Patrick J. Joyce and every Republican voting against it.

Senate President, Don Harmon, calls the budget is a win for the state, saying in a statement after the vote:

This is a responsible, responsive and balanced budget for the great state of Illinois. It offers meaningful investments in our priorities and shared goals. I want to thank my colleagues in the Senate, House Speaker Welch and Governor Pritzker for all their work in putting this plan together.

However, Republicans call the budget "irresponsible" and say it will hurt Illinois families. Senator Chapin Rose saying in a statement:

He [Pritzker] is soaking the working people of this state in taxes to pay for illegal immigrants, EV credits for the rich, and to raise local taxes on small communities. This is nuts, but that is J.B. Pritzker’s vision for Illinois and America. However, it is not mine, and I voted no.

The state budget must now be approved by the House of Representatives before it is sent to the Governor’s desk. The budget will go into effect when the new fiscal year starts on July 1st.
